After a break, we are back with the next edition of Sunday Sound Effects Roundup. This week we look at new libraries from Articulated Sounds, Thomas Rex Beverly, Rusty Dunn, HISSandaROAR, Red Libraries and Tonstrum.
Busy Streets From Articulated Sounds
‘Busy Streets’ is a sound library containing surround and stereo sound ambiences designed to set the scene of bustling cities – recorded in Chicago, New York and Philadelphia. The library is available in stereo, and surround (Quad). With ‘Busy Streets’ they used an exclusive SSS technique (Stealth Surround System) which means the recording process was hidden from the eyes even with 4 discrete channels. The library is made up of 74 Surround authentic ambience recordings between 1 to 5 minutes long each, non-disturbed city life...

Northern Rockies 1: Common Loons From Thomas Rex Beverly
Northern Rockies 1: Common Loons is a collection of the strange and mythical calls of Common Loons. These beautiful birds have haunting calls that sing across the boreal lakes of North America. This library includes sounds of a nesting pair captured during a full week of night time and dawn recording in Glacier National Park, Montana. Thomas is donating 2% of the price of this library to an environmental cause. He views it as an “artist royalty” for the planet! Also carbon offset credits were purchased for the Northern Rockies Series and the field recording travel for this library was carbon neutral.

Essential Sound Italian Cityscapes and Ambience From Rusty Dunn
Essential Sound Italian Cityscapes and Ambience has been recorded throughout 4 parts of Italy (Rome, Naples, Positano, Tivoli Gardens), the 3 hours 45min of material gives a large variety of sound to choose from.
Every city/town has a signature sound of its own. The constant hum or “Din” of a city varies. For example, Rome is known for its many scooters, motorbikes, and church-bells.
Of the 60 tracks, a majority are over 4 mins. and some are 5 min in length. Rusty has edited out all the rough areas, and material of no consequence (the boring bits) to tighten and heighten the clips, and make them sound interesting.
The processing used is minimal. DMG EQ, C4 Compressor, and a little noise reduction in some cases. Mostly very transparent processing. There may be a moment or two where there is a wind bluster, but because of the nature of the track, I chose to minimize instead of chop out.
- Number of Files: 60
- 3.9 GB Including metadata
- Sample Rate: 48kHz/24bit
- Duration: Approx. 225 minutes

Cave Ambiences From HISSandaROAR
For Cave Ambiences Tim Prebble's first location was Taya Cavern in Ofuna, Japan – a maze of tunnels dug by the hands of Buddhist monks. On a hot summers day the coolness of the caves was welcome relief, but after repeat visits, Tim noticed the beautiful resonance of the chambers within the cave system, a feature which must have been incredible when the monks were chanting sutras in complete darkness.
The second location was the Box Canyon Cave in Kahurangi National Park, NZ. This is a large cave with ceiling height reaching over 4m, but at its furthest reaches – a side tunnel that eventually narrows to become unpassable, this was also the quietest location I have ever experienced. While the general ambience was so low level as to be almost inaudible, some very useful Impulse responses were captured.
The third location was the Mangaroa Tunnel, a dis-used train tunnel in Upper Hutt. As this is only a 30 minute drive from Tim's house he revisited it many times, capturing it during a range of dampness & rain…
The fourth location was the ultimate, travelling deep into a West Coast forest via the Nile River Rainforest Train and then hiking to Te Ananui (Metro) Cave system. This is an ancient cave system, which is visually mind-blowing but the range of acoustics and elements was varied, including an underground waterfall and a river, while other areas were almost silent & practically anechoic.
Last for the library, Tim has also staged & recorded a series of close up single drips and trickles with processed/reverbant versions also included.

Bodyfall Volume 1 & 2 From Red Libraries
Bodyfall has been designed as a toolbox to design impacts on floor on a lot of surfaces.
Their first volume is about Concrete/Generic and Hard Metal surfaces, whereas volume 2 is about Wood Rustic and Metal Grid.
Bodyfall is a multi-volume sound library, which they designed in collaboration with prize-winning french foley artist: Florian Fabre. Recorded in a famous foley studio: Hiventy (Audis de Joinville, Paris area). Each volume offers 2 different falling surfaces. On each of them, there are sounds of different parts of the human body: Chest (simulated with 4 textures of distinct densities, labeled M1,M2,M3 and M4), feet, knees, and hands, have all been separated. All recordings were made from 3 distances (close, mid, distant) with 3 strength levels (hard, medium, soft). Finally, this huge toolbox provides you with infinite combinations to make your own and unique bodyfalls.

Gasoline Explosions From Tonstrum
Gasoline Explosions features fat and air ripping sound of pure gasoline blowing up. 11 charges varying from 3 litres to 25 litres were recorded from multiple perspectives. They had the opportunity to record at a large dirt pit which turned out to be the ideal spot for our recordings. Besides close and medium distant placed microphones they were also able to feature sounds recorded from 150 meters away. These distant recordings were captured with 4 wide spaced omni microphones in quad surround.
They also came up with carefully designed explosion effects mixed and processed exclusively using the original source material from this library.
