We often (usually?) want narrow bass and wide treble. Most of the time this isn’t hard to do but a great example is stereo tremolo on an electric piano. It’s not unusual to back off the tremolo because of the bass end panning hard from side to side.
In this free video tutorial, brought to you with the support of Plugin Alliance, Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers demonstrates how the Mono-maker as found in the bx_digital V3 EQ is the perfect tool to sort this out. By setting the Monomaker just high enough to keep the deep bass narrow but letting the midrange and top end move right across the panorama it is the ideal example to show what mono-maker does and why you might want it.
Pan EQ
The bx_panEQ has the perfect display to visualise this effect, it plots stereo position on the x axis, frequency on the y axis and amplitude as brightness. Once you see the effect of the filter in monomaker in this display you’ll be in no doubt as to what Mono-maker does.
