Are you working on an audio mix for Netflix but unable to use Insight because it hasn’t got dialog-gating and a Netflix preset? Worry no longer, iZotope has announced Insight 2.1 which brings a Netflix preset for all those working on Netflix content.
What Has Been Added To Insight 2.1
Last year, Netflix updated their audio mix specifications, recommending that content delivered for their streaming service meet a dialog-gated loudness target of -27 LKFS. You can read more about the Netflix delivery spec in our detailed article and then read the response we received from Netflix too.
This change in Netflix’s preferred average loudness is impacting more and more broadcast and re-recording mixers, and those who prefer to use iZotope’s Insight metering plug-in to make sure the shows and movies they mix meet delivery specs haven’t been able to use Insight 2 for their Netflix work. As I said in my review when Insight 2 was first released back in September 2018…
It is a shame that they haven’t been able to respond to the new Netflix spec and add the dialog gating mode and Netflix presets with Dialog LRA. I am sure that they are working on it and let’s hope it will be added in a further update in the not too distant future.
The good news is that the wait is over, you can now use Insight 2 for your Netflix workflows.
Layouts
Insight 2 comes with lots of presets, which iZotope are calling Layouts. Version 2.1 comes with a new Target named "Netflix" that enables the Dialogue gate and sets the LRA targets to the expected values. Here’s a screenshot of the Netflix Target…
As I cover in my Understanding Loudness course, Integrated Loudness is a measurement that is averaged over the duration of the program. To get an accurate reading, you need to first select the Target, then play all the way through the program in order to make sure that the integrated measurement meets the selected loudness Target. But to save time you can use the offline option. You can hit “analyze” in the Pro Tools AudioSuite version of Insight 2 for a faster analysis (that way you don't have to listen through the entire program in real time to get a measurement).
Another update iZotope has made with Insight 2.1 is to move the controls for Peak, Loudness, and Gate (which used to be positioned next to the Targets dropdown menu) into the Target selection panel. This brings together all the controls, rather than take up space in the main panel.
