In this review for Pro Tools Expert, Technical Editor James Ivey takes a look at 2 of the new recording devices from Tascam for the multimedia producer.
The DR-10X and the DR-10SG are both based on the same MicroSD card recording platform, however, the differences give these two, problem-solving units a place in any camera or recording person's bag or tricks.
The Tascam DR-10X is a compact unit that can attach to the bottom of any Dynamic mics with an XLR connection. It can also be used with self-powered condenser mics like the AKG C1000. Setup is simple making this a very useful tool for those recording on the fly or in situations where timing is everything.
The Tascam DR-10SG is a hot shoe based recorder with a built in Shotgun mic. The mic comes with a foam wind guard which works well. The mic has a super cardioid pickup pattern with good off-axis rejection making it very useful for speech where you don't want a hand-held mic in shot.
