The algorithms on the surround versions have much more extensive control of early reflections. There are multiple patterns and many more ways of distributing those reflections. This is especially useful for mixers doing ADR or foley work. The gate in R2 Surround is also more powerful. Finally, there are additional delays and gain controls to allow these reverbs to work in complex multichannel mixes.

The The surround versions will sound very similar to the stereo plug-ins although the additional early reflection control means that the  surround plug-ins are more flexible.

The Does R2 Surround sound like PhoenixVerb Surround? Although they look alike and are controlled in the same way, they’re different reverbs. PhoenixVerb Surround is very transparent—natural if you want to use that term.
