This Week’s Featured Pro Tools Expert Interview

We have spent some time curating all the excellent interviews we have undertaken over the years into an Interviews page. This Week’s Featured Pro Tools Expert Interview is Mike’s Interview - Bob Bronow On Mixing & Sound Design For TV.

Pro Tools First Basics

Edgar Rothermich has developed a series of what he describes as graphically enhanced manuals and he has released the first manual on the Pro Tools First which is the free version of Pro Tools but the great news is that this work isn’t just for Pro Tools First users, as so much of what it covers applies to Pro Tools.

Edgar is also been creating us free unique content for us here at Pro Tools Expert again to help Pro Tools First users and people new to Pro Tools understand what’s going on. You can learn more about Edgar and his unique style in our recent Audio Market Profile, as well as learn more about his new Pro Tools First book which is available in 3 formats, pdf file, interactive multi-touch books through Apple’s iBook Store and as printed books through Amazon. Edgar has 13 manuals covering a wide range of applications including Final Cut Pro X, Logic Pro and Garageband.

Our friends at RSPE Audio have released another short Pro Tools S6 control surface tutorial with Gary Lux showing you how to navigate soft key banks using the numeric keypad. This allows you to easily access and control your S6 mixer's spill zones by simply pressing the shift button on any of the fader moles and the enter button on the numeric keypad.

  • Bertrand Grichting wanted to share his experience with using a Logitech MX Master Mouse with Pro Tools with two scroll wheels and extra buttons.
    • The top scroll wheel and buttons are on default
    • The scroll wheel on the left which is controlled by the thumb is, no surprise, for scrolling horizontally in Pro Tools
    • There are two up/down-buttons on the side of the left scroll-wheel which i use for changing track-size
    • On the thumb-rest there is another button built in that is not visible, just beneath the surface. You can click the button by just pressing the thumb down on the area. I have assigned that button to change from Edit to Mix window and vice versa.
    • Mike added that he uses a Logitech M510 mouse as it enables horiziontal scrolling by pushing the scroll wheel left and right.
  • Robert Bowlus got back in touch following his question last week on MIDI real time properties and found that the Display Events as Modified by Real-Time Properties preferences setting was set so that the MIDI events are displayed as modified. Once he turned this preference of all worked as he expected.

  • Gok Turok is working in the underground techno genre and wanted our opinion as to whether Pro Tools is the right tool for working in this genre or are there other tools better suited to this genre.
