Sunday Sound Effects Roundup - Sonocaine, Tonstrum, A Sound Effect

Sonocaine Release Quad City Berlin

Sebastian from Sonocaine has reached out to us to let us know that they have released a new library entitled Quad City Berlin.

Quad City Berlin is a collection of extra-wide quadrophonic recordings from Berlin, Germany. It was created to work as an internationally usable library of urban ambiences and traffic sounds whilst also capturing the unique sounds of Berlin.

The recordings are mainly focused on large open spaces and the fat low-end hum of major city traffic. Locations include rooftops, main roads, squares, residential areas, parks, freeways and room ambiences.

The recording session took place in the fall of 2015 where birdsong is usually very sparse and the weather can still be sunny and dry. Thanks to these conditions, most of the recordings contain no bird chirping at all.

All recordings where made using the same microphone setup: four omni-directional mics with equal distances to each other and one MS rig at the front side.

Depending on the location, the omnis where placed up to 3 meters apart to deliver a truly wide sound that works well on a cinema mixing stage. The MS signal serves as both a center signal (if needed) and a stereo option that is also mono compatible.

The four omnis where high-end Bruel&Kjaer (DPA) microphones with a remarkable quality in the low frequencies. They work exceptionally well for city background hum and low engine sounds producing a very full and warm, yet precise sound.

Quad City Berlin comes in two flavours: the complete 6-channel recordings (four omnis + MS) and a discounted A-B stereo version. The library is available for an early bird special price of 99$ ($79 for the stereo version) until April 17th.

A Sound Effect - The Ten Signature Sound Elements Of Modern Movie Trailers

On the A Sound Effect blog this week is a very interesting story about movie trailers. There are few places where music and sound design intertwine as much as they do in movie trailers. And when it comes to trailer sound, Jan Hoeglund and the trailer sound team at Audio Imperia really know their stuff. Asbjoern at A Sound Effect was curious to hear their insights on what defines the sound of the modern trailer. You can pop over the the A Sound Effect blog to read Jan’s overview of 10 signature sound elements in today’s trailers, complete with examples.

The right trailer can set the success of a film, a video game or a tv show before they are released. It is a major element in the big marketing machine of studios’ release plans and the music that goes along with the visual part of a trailer plays no small part in that. There is a lot of players in the game that have this formula down to a tee: Extreme Music, Two Steps From Hell, Immediate Music, Audiomachine, Brand X, Ninja Tracks, Really Slow Motion, Confidential Music, HiFinesse, Sencit, Riptide Music, just to name a few. And each of them bring a different flavor to the table.
One of the more exciting things in the modern trailer music world is the incredible phenomena where a single sound can make a trailer track stand out. Writing trailer music is a very different style of music and different style of writing as a composer to begin with.
