Windows 7 Update Asus Motherboards Issue

Got One Of These In Your Windows 7 Pro Tools Computer?

Then be VERY careful about installing the recent Microsoft Windows 7 update - KB3133977.

Whilst doing my weekend browse of the excellent The Register website, I was alerted to an issue that could dramatically affect a huge percentage of Windows Pro Tools users, so thought it best to share this with the community as fast as possible.

The Unofficial Standard

Most latest generation Windows Pro Tools computers are based on Asus motherboards. They have the best reliability and compatibility track record and also feature interfaces such as Thunderbolt 2 and 3. I personally have a X99-A Asus motherboard, but I'm now running Windows 10 Pro.

The Issue

It has been revealed that a recent Microsoft Windows 7 update involving the UEFI boot system, can invoke a "secure boot violation" and prevent the operating system (Windows) from loading.

Optional Or Recommended?

Microsoft recently revised the classification of this update from "optional" to "recommended", meaning that many users might fall in to the trap of installing it now.

Going by the information on The Register, my advice would be DON'T. Or upgrade to Windows 8.1 or Windows 10, which don't have this issue.

The Workaround

Microsoft recommend going to Asus' website, which will give you instructions on how to disable "Secure Boot".

As always, best of luck, and please let us know in the comments below if you've been affected by this issue and what you have done to resolve it.
