In this edition of our Throwback Thursday series, we take a look back at the original Tannoy Reveal studio monitors. We remember these in the early Noughties being very popular with the home studio crowd as these were a low-cost solution for "professional" monitoring. At the time there was quite a significant price difference between the Tannoy Reveals and the next level up in pro-quality monitoring. The Reveal actives cost around £350 new with the passives costing quite a lot less.

The Tannoy Reveal was available in both passive (red face) and self-powered active models (blue face). I personally was not keen on the passive models as I felt they had no real guts or energy to them. On reflection, this was most likely due to people using equally cheap power amps to drive them.

The first set of studio monitors I purchased were a set of blue faced Tannoy Reveal Actives. I absolutely loved them. Don't get me wrong, they sounded like crap in comparison to other sets I was using in other studios but I quickly learnt how to work with them. They had a very vague top end with an overpowering muddy mid range. These sonic characteristics are best described as "higher-fi" "lower-pro" - if you know what I mean.

I set up a small home studio in mid-2014 for my wife and I to use. The old Tannoy Reveals got set up and I happily used them for six months up until I moved my main recording studio home with my Adams monitors. Now they live in my loft collecting dust until the next time I need them.

These days you can easily find a used set of either the passive or active Reveals on ebay at silly low prices.
