pureMix Free Tutorial - Toggle Grid And Slip Mode in Pro Tools

In this free Pro Tools Quick Tip from pureMix Mark Abrams highlights a useful way of temporarily entering Slip mode from Grid mode when editing in Pro Tools.

Switching between edit modes can be achieved by using the function keys:

  • F1 -Shuffle
  • F2 - Slip
  • F3 - Spot
  • F4 - Grid

For many of us, especially those of us using using laptops, our function keys are often set up to control OS features such as Mission Control on a Mac so we might need to be adding a Fn to those keystrokes but even without this, these multiple keystrokes are an obstacle. Using tilde to cycle the edit modes is an alternative but if two extra keystrokes are inconvenient then four isn't an attractive alternative.

Using Command (Control on PC) to momentarily toggle between Grid and Slip, or as I prefer to think of it, temporarily suspending snapping (same thing but somehow clearer in my mind) is an invaluable addition to your editing chops, it works for edit selections, trimming, automation breakpoints, anywhere where Grid mode constrains events to the grid value.
