Have you ever wanted to mark up a script or ADR recording session with your edit notes whilst recording with Pro Tools but have had to resort to pen and paper? Well, I have and I am sure I am not alone. The team from Quiet Art have also spotted this limitation and developed a solution centred around an app called Recorditor.

What Does Recorditor Do?

Recorditor has been designed to allow you to mark good and bad takes during a recording in sync with your timeline, and then it performs your edit decisions automatically.

Recorditor is intended to banish the need to scribble notes on scripts and then having to go through tedious edit sessions sifting through takes.

Recorditor is designed to assist users in scripted narration and dialog recording sessions such as animation dialog, audio books, IVR prompts, text to speech applications, or any other recording session that needs tidying up.

How To Use Recorditor

With Recorditor, the basic methodology is that you can live-edit the takes using two keys on your keyboard.

• Left Arrow: Bad
• Right Arrow: Good

You can write comments / notes for each take, or even change your mind about the take after dropping the marker.

In playing with Recorditor, I found it a very different way of working that took me a little while to get to grips with. To help people like me the team at Quiet Art produced this little video to show how to start using Recorditor...

As you can see from the video one of the tricks is before the first words are spoken to hit the back arrow to clean the front and create a marker for what you are about to read. With each successfully read sentence I would then drop a right arrow marker. and for stumbles etc. I would drop the left arrow and so on.

How do I mark the beginning and end of a take?  - Each time you drop a marker it's marking the end of a previous take and the start of a new one. So when you start a recording always start with a bad marker just before you start reading so the rubbish at the start before the take is cleaned up. And as you are reading I'd say it's best to mark as much as possible, i.e each sentence, so that if there is a mistake within a paragraph it's easily sifted out.

How do I mark where the pickup should happen from? - A Pickup marker is same as Good marker, but we called it Pickup to differentiate it visually so that while putting the takes together, you can easily see where there are pickups.  Pickups are meant to be dropped in after a good overall take but the reader wanted to do it again for any reason. Or you can drop pickup markers in playback mode.

Can I change my mind about a marker? - You can use the shortcut Command+2 to change a decision from Keep to Delete.

How To Setup Recorditor

There are a few things to be aware of when setting up Recorditor with Pro Tools because it is a separate application that is communicating with Pro tools using ReWire. Quiet Art has produced this video to help with the setup process.

No ReWire Plug-in In Pro Tools? - One problem I had in setting up recorditor is that the Rewire Plug-in did not show up in the Instruments Plug-in menu as it does in this video. In discussing this with Vedat at Quiet Art, apparently, I haven't been the only one to suffer this problem. The solution is to force Pro tools to rescan the plug-in folder.

To do this quit Pro Tools and delete the InstalledAAXPlugins file found in your user preferences (in Finder, you will probably have to hold down Option whilst you click the Go menu, and you'll see then see theLibrary option appear there.)

You need to go to ~/Library/Preferences/Avid/Pro Tools/InstalledAAXPlugins Once that file has been deleted then restart Pro Tools and the Recorditor ReWire plugin should be visible in the Instruments Plug-in menu.
