Free Tutorial - Recording Drum Kit - Part 1 - Using A Single Microphone

See this content in the original post

In this free video tutorial for Production Expert, Drummer, James Ivey shows you how to record a full drum kit using only one microphone.  James talks about some of the pros, cons and considerations to think about when using this technique.

In the free introduction to a series of video tutorials, James starts by looking at some of the playing considerations that you as the engineer will have to discuss with your drummer when recording using this technique.  He then goes on to talk about the position of the single overhead mic which is, in this case, a Hammer Audio HA-872.  James demonstrates the results when the mic set to a Cardioid and Omni-directions pick-up pattern and some of the benefits of using both settings.

In the next video in this series, James will look at adding a Bass Drum (Kick Drum) mic to give some bottom end punch and then a second overhead mic to create a Stereo image of the kit.

You will need to subscribe to our premium video tutorial platform to be able to watch the rest of this series and over 1000 video tutorials from the Production Expert team and selected tutorial providers.
