Sennheiser Ambeo VR Ambisonics Microphone

The Sennheiser Ambeo Mic is an ambisonic microphone fitted with four matched KE 14 capsules in a tetrahedral arrangement, which allows you to capture the sound that surrounds you from a single point.

The capsules of the Sennheiser Ambeo Mic deliver A-format, which is the raw 4-channel output that can then be converted into Ambisonics B-format.  Sennheiser have provided a free A-B format converter plugin, which is available as free download for VST, AU and AAX format for your preferred Digital Audio Workstation for both PC and Mac. B-format is a W, X, Y, Z representation of the sound field around the microphone. 

You can then use the B Format signal to produce surround or binaural content, using appropriate software and plugins from brands like Soundfield, Noisemakers and Harpex.

At last ambisoncs, which has been around since the eighties, has found a home and an application in Virtual Reality (VR).

Nugen Audio Audio Management Batch Processor Software

The Nugen Audio Audio Management Batch Processor software (AMB) enables post-production facilities to speed workflows significantly and reduce delivery times for a range of different tasks, with separate modules available for upmixing and loudness management. AMB also offers new features including threaded algorithm processing and multiple processing threads that are addressable for simultaneous parallel handling of files and queues.

AMB has been designed to offer complete scalability, allowing post-production facilities of all sizes to add the exact processing modules they need and tailor the system to their specific requirements. Examples include extensions to repurpose content for LRA or to process audio within MXF or .mov files.

James Highlights

Pro Tools Backlit LogicKeyboard

As part of my new PC based Pro Tools system, on which, more to follow, I have ordered a backlit Pro Tools keyboard from the guys at LogicKeyboard. Mike has also been looking at the Mac backlit keyboard from Logic Keyboards and is producing a shootout review between the LogicKeyboard and the Editors Keys backlit keyboards, so watch out for that on the site in the coming weeks.

Smart Studio

So many studio builds and refurbishments are built from scratch on site which takes time and can be disruptive to the business and neighbours. we have heard about a different approach that a new company, Smart Studio have developed. They use active acoustic technology and modern building techniques and materials, enabling studios to be designed and built off site and then delivered and installed on site with the minimum of disruption and time lost for the studio build. You can read more about how Smart Studio helped Flix Facilities in Manchester get a dubbing suite built on the 7th floor of a tower block in Media City.
