I moved house recently. I run my recording studio business from home so the house move also included packing up my recording studio and all of my studio gear. As I started the painful task of packing for the move it became apparent very early on that I had not kept any of the original boxes or packagings for at least 95% my studio gear. The cardboard boxes that were provided by my moving company were not suitable sizes for items such as my studio monitors, studio rack units or my large Avid C|24 control surface.

The Solution - Packing Studio Gear Without Original Boxes

I didn't feel comfortable transporting all my studio gear in bubble wrap alone, Items such as my studio monitors and rack gear required a more rigid shell of protection for the large transporter. I quickly came up with an affordable solution - I purchased a bulk lot of plastic folding boxes that fitted my rack gear perfectly. The slits in the sides of the plastic boxes braced the gear in the box perfectly with off cuts of cardboard on the top to protect the gear further I felt confident my studio gear would arrive at the new house unharmed. I also used these plastic boxes to pack my monitors. One monitor would fit in a plastic box face up with another plastic box covering the face of the monitor protecting the drivers. These boxes cost about £5 each and got all my gear to the house undamaged.

The 5% Of Studio Gear Boxes I Kept

I don't keep studio gear boxes as I don't like the clutter in my attic, garage or house, however, there is one studio gear box I keep as it is so much more than a disposable cardboard box. I forgot about this box when I started packing - when I found it buried in my loft I smiled as I knew my Creme would get to my new house safe and sound. The Creme isn't, as rack units go, the most expensive rack unit on the market yet Tegeler Audio ship all their products in these wooden crates. I know not all studio gear can be shipped in wood crates, it's just not economical, but I just wanted to point out in this article how grateful I was to have at least one studio item that I really value-packed up safe when I moved house.
