This Week’s Featured Pro Tools Expert Interview

This week’s featured interview is Paul Drew’s chat with Bobby Owsinski about the music industry, his work as an author, producer and mix engineer.

Questions From The Community

  • Brian asks what he feels may be a dumb question but he is having a difficult time with it. He is in the process of mastering songs for the album, but what is the process to put all those tracks let's say about 12 of them on a CD or for digital release such as iTunes and so forth? He also asks how to make the album flow with levelling the tracks and then time in between the separate tracks?
    • 10 Things You Should Do Before Sending Your Mix To A Mastering Engineer - Part 1
  • Ross Newbauer has a Mac Mini Late 2012, 2.3 Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, 5400RPM internal drive, running macOS 10.12.5 with Pro Tools 12.7.1. He primarily mixes and has recently been hitting a lot of walls in Pro Tools running out of CPU power and need to remove native plugins. He has tried a number of upgrades like SSD system drive, converting working drives to a Thunderbolt raid, but would value our advice. He has considered "upgrading" to a souped-up Cheese-grater tower but it doesn't have thunderbolt, and he is not quite ready to drop cash on a trashcan!

Mark DeWaters He has been using X-Form lately to change the pitch on audio clips as a tool to help me hear what it would sound like, and also a tool for the vocalist to learn the new melody. Lately, he has had an issue where the option is not available on some clips. When he right clicks and selects "Elastic Properties", it reads "No elastic clips selected". The clip is selected, and it's on the same track as all of the other clips. Also - there is a tiny icon that appears in the bottom left of those clips, to the left of the fader arrow. Looks like a tiny waveform, but he can't figure out what the difference is between the clips that he can use X-Form with, and those that he can't. He did import this audio track from another session. Any insights you have would, as always, be greatly appreciated!
