Free Tutorial - Using EQ And Reverb To Create Size On Film Sound Effects

Here is another free video tutorial from Oscar-nominated Marcelo Cryo. In this tutorial, Marcelo takes a look how you can affect the punch and size of a sound in audio post production. Over to you Marcelo....

Today we are going to talk about using reverb to give "Size" for the sound. I use reverb in 2 different ways:

  1. To put the sound behind in the mix, to position it in the scene.
  2. To give "size".

When I need to give a sound size, I will open out the pan controls and use the pre-delay and the early reflections to delay the sound and allow a small amount of the dry signal to pass through and so not be affected by the reverb. I then use the tail of the reverb to complement the sound.

This way you don't loose the dry signal that gives the impact, but adding the reverb tail to give the "size"!

If I want to make the sound even bigger then I like to add low end on the reverb. As you will see in the video I like to use the Pultec EQ trick.
