When a band is playing a track for the first time in the studio, the tempo can become a moving target. If you simply change the tempo at the band's request via the conductor, there's no record of which take was which tempo. This free video tutorial shows how you can customize your tempo for each take and playlist in your Pro Tools session giving you a handy way to keep your BPMs organized.

Recording Your Click

• First, create a click track by using the Create Click Track shortcut from the Track pulldown at the very top of the screen in Pro Tools

• Click on the output of the click track and use the New Track function to create a new mono audio track and name it CLICK RECORD

• Set the output of the new audio track to an appropriate output for routing to the talent and the control room

• For every song take and playlist, record the click on the CLICK RECORD track as you record the rest of the tracks

Quick And Easy Click Editing And Volume Control

• Once the band decides on a tempo on which to proceed with further takes and overdubs, take the CLICK RECORD track out of record for playback and editing

• On the click clip, use the trim and other editing tools quickly manipulate the click for the best results. For example, reduce the clip gain on sections of the click on a "down" verse or chorus where the band comes down in volume and there is danger of the click bleeding from the headphones into the mics. Also, trim the end of the click on the last chord of the song or if the band performs a rubato ending where the click is not needed.
