Avid has added a number of keyboard shortcuts to Pro Tools 2018.7 and to help to show how they fit into workflows as well as adding certain commands that were only available as shortcuts to the Edit menu.

Commands related to the Edit selection are now organised in the Selection submenu as follows:

Move Edit Left - Moves the entire current Edit selection to the left by the duration of the selection.

• Command+Option+Control+L (Mac)
• Control+Alt+Start+L (Windows)
• In Commands Keyboard focus, press L.

Move Edit Right - Moves the entire current Edit selection to the right by the duration of the selection.

• Command+Option+Control+’ (single quote) (Mac)
• Control+Alt+Start+’ (single quote) (Windows)
• In Commands Keyboard focus, press ’ (single quote)

Halve Selection - Maintains the current Edit selection start time but reduced its duration by half.

• Command+Option+Control+Shift+L (Mac)
• Control+Alt+Start+Shift+L (Windows)

Double Selection - Maintains the current Edit selection start time and doubles its duration.

• Command+Option+Control+Shift+’ (single quote) (Mac)
• Control+Alt+Start+Shift+’ (single quote) (Windows)

Duplicate and Extend Selection - Pro Tools now lets you duplicate the Edit selection (including all track data in the selection), keep the selection start, and extend the selection to the end of the duplicate. This facilitates working with audio loops and repeating MIDI content.

To duplicate the Edit selection, maintain the current selection start, and extend the selection to end of the duplicate, do one of the following:

• Choose Edit > Selection > Duplicate And Extend Selection.
• Press Command+Option+Control+Shift+D (Mac) or Control+Alt+Start+Shift+D (Windows).

Move Edit Up - Moves the Edit selection up one track. If more than one track is included in the current Edit selection, those tracks are removed from the selection and the selection is only on the one track.

• Control+P (Mac)
• Start+P (Windows)
• In Commands Keyboard focus, press P

Move Edit Down - Moves the Edit selection down one track. If more than one track is included in the current Edit selection, those tracks are removed from the selection and the selection is only on the one track.

• Control+; (semicolon) (Mac)
• Start+; (semicolon) (Windows)
• In Commands Keyboard focus, press ; (semicolon)

Extend Edit Up - Extends the Edit selection up one track.

• Control+Shift+P (Mac)
• Start+Shift+P (Windows)

Extend Edit Down - Extends the Edit selection down one track.

• Control+Shift+; (semicolon) (Mac)
• Start+Shift+; (semicolon) (Windows)

Remove Edit from Top - Removes the top track from the Edit selection.

• Option+Control+P (Mac)
• Alt+Start+P

Remove Edit from Bottom - Removes the bottom track from the Edit selection.

• Option+Control+; (Mac)
• Alt+Start+; (semicolon)

Pro Tools features key commands in the Edit menu that make it easy to navigate selections in the timeline so that you spend less time clicking around and more time being creative. Whilst many of the shortcuts have been around for a long time they were only known by keyboard shortcut ninjas.

To speed things up, even more, make sure you have the keyboard focus turned on. To do this, go to the top right corner of the Tracks section of the Edit window where you will find a small box with 'a...z'. Once enabled you will have access to a keyboard full of one button shortcuts.

In this first video, Dave takes us through the basic navigation shortcuts based around the 4 single button shortcuts to move selections around the Edit window. Up one track (P), Down one track (;) Move left to the next clip boundary (L) and (') to move right to the next clip boundary. Then Dave shows how with the addition of the modifier keys you can make these 4 single key presses even more powerful.

This video explores some of the Edit menu items and key commands in Pro Tools, to help you quickly make clip selections, create arrangements, and navigate your session so that you can stay in the creative flow without too much clicking around.

In this video, Dave shows how a new Duplicate related shortcut added in Pro Tools 2018.7. Duplicate and Extend Selection is different to the original Duplicate command in that both the duplicated and original clips stay selected making it even easier to duplicate clips because if you use the new shortcut again you will double the number of clips.
