There's a rumour that Apple is about to release a new line of MacBook Pro laptops. Pro Tools users it might be what you've been waiting for.

There's been a lot of talk on Pro Tools Expert about Apple Macs not being up to the job for Pro Tools users. To be fair when it comes to Mac laptops and the spec for Pro Tools 2018 then it seems people may have a point.

Here is Pro Tools 2018 Minimum System Requirements for Mac:

• Intel® Mac with Mac OS X 10.11.6, macOS 10.12.6 or 10.13.3
• Please find version specific qualifications in the macOS Compatibility Grid below.
• Intel® Core i5 processor (Pro Tools Standard), Intel® Core i7 processor (Pro Tools Ultimate)
• 16GB RAM (32GB or more recommended)
• Internet connection for installation
• 15GB disk space for installation
• USB-port for iLok authorization (iLok 2 or iLok 3 required)
• PCIe slot for HDX or HD Native card (incl. one power connection on motherboard), Thunderbolt-port for supported PCIe-chassis
• or USB-port, FireWire-port or Thunderbolt-port for CoreAudio-supported audio device
• Supports 64-bit AAX plug-ins in Pro Tools

You can see from the minimum spec above that Pro Tools requires 16GB of RAM with 32GB recommended, however it's not possible to buy a MacBook with anything larger than 16GB of RAM. 

Mac website MacWorld has rumours of the new MacBook Pro 2018 and expected specs.

In an article posted July 6th 2018 they report;

"We think it's likely that Apple will update the MacBook Pro soon. In fact it is surprising that the company didn't update them at WWDC in June 2018. But when will this MacBook Pro update happen, and will there be a special event? Read all about the next Apple event here.

It looks like Apple will soon launch a new range of MacBooks. Regulatory filings appeared in July 2018 hinting that five new MacBook models and five new iPad models are in the works.

The filings, with the Eurasian Economic Commission (spotted by French Mac news siteConsomac), list five model identifiers: A1931, A1932, A1988, A1989 and A1990. The latter three of those arethought to relate to a new 13in MacBook Pro, 13in MacBook Pro with TouchBar and a 15in MacBook Pro with TouchBar.

The first two identifiers could be a 12in and 13in MacBook (the latter being the rumoured updated to the 13in MacBook Air). Read about the MacBook and MacBook Air rumours here.

These five Mac models could launch before macOS Mojave arrives in the autumn - the ones registered as listed as running macOS 10.13 - which is High Sierra. 

Another indication that something could be coming soon is the appearance of a device listed as "MacBookPro14,3" on Geekbench (since June 2018). The device is using the new 6-core Intel Core i7-8750H Coffee Lake processor offering 2.21GHz per core, and a Turbo Boost up of 4.1GHz.

The machine scored a single-core score of 4,902, and a multi-core score of 22,316, which is far ahead any MacBook Pro offered currently.

Pro users will also be glad to learn that this model offers 32GB RAM. As you will see from the section below, a 32GB RAM offering is being cried out for by pro users.

Another indication that a new model could be coming came from Apple's online store - at least in the UK - which seemed (at the end of May) to indicate that there may be an update in store. If you look at the 13in MacBook Pro page, the entry-level 13in model is listed as shipping from 6-8 June."

So a 6 Core MacBook Pro with 32GB RAM, a MacBook that can run Pro Tools to recommended spec. Is this the MacBook you've been waiting for or will you pass?
