When getting to know compression it's really common for people to use percussive sounds. That's understandable as they are ideal for getting to know the important controls, particularly the attack and release controls. In this premium video tutorial, Pro Tools Expert Team member Julian Rodgers explores the effect of attack and release times on sounds with slower dynamic changes.
Undoing Tremolo
Starting with the question of whether it is possible to undo tremolo using a compressor Julian goes on to experiment with the effect the attack and release controls have on the shape of the tremolo. Of course, if you don't want any tremolo on your sounds, don't put any on in the first place but this isn't about removing the effect as much as it is about exploring the controls on a compressor.
Pro Compressor's Transfer Curve And Metering
Compressor plug-ins usually have a transfer curve display which plots input versus output. Avid's Channelstrip and Pro Compressor plug-ins have a transfer curve which plots Input versus gain-reduction. This experiment really helps clarify how attack and release times are displayed on this type of metering.
