Snapshot Automation In Pro Tools Ultimate, Live Sound Mixers Use It, Do You? - Expert Tutorial

See this content in the original post

In this premium video tutorial, Pro Tools Expert team member Julian Rodgers looks snapshot automation, a method of automating Pro Tools, which is just as useful as conventional automation but is less well known.

Snapshots, More Useful than You Might think

Conventional automation allows any automatable parameter to change over time, whether that change is gradual over time or an instantaneous change. Pro Tools Ultimate users have the option of using snapshot automation to write individual or all automation enabled parameters to entire sections with a single keystroke. There are some very sophisticated automation options available in Pro Tools Ultimate, write to start and end, Capture and Preview and the like offer huge power and are bread and butter to Post mixers but music mixers often rely on standard automation, maybe adding some Trim passes but often not venturing further into the Extra options available in Ultimate.

Snapshot automation is a useful extra feature in that it allows a series of static mix balances to be used in different sections of a song and rides, tweaks and the like can added on a second pass. I like this approach as it splits the big picture from the detail in a useful way. Do you use Snapshot Automation?
