The Quick Way To Create New Tracks In Pro Tools - In Less Than A Minute

In a new format we are producing videos offering tips and solutions to common problems in under a minute. In this free video tutorial we show you the fast way to create new tracks in Pro Tools.

Why Not Use The New Tracks Dialog

If you know how to control it using the keyboard the new tracks dialog is very fast. You can create all the tracks you need for a session in a single step with different track types and channel widths. However if you find you need one extra of a particular track type the there’s an even faster way. Just double click. That will create another one of whatever the last track type you created was. if it was a mono audio track, thats what you’ll get, if it was a stereo Instrument track, then that’s what you’ll get.

Add Modifiers For More Control

If you add a modifier you’ll get one of four track types, the channel width will follow the last created track:

  • Command/Control - Audio

  • Option/Alt - Instrument

  • Control/Start - Aux Input

  • Shift - Master Fader

What About The Other Track Types?

What if you need a MIDI track or a VCA or a Video Track? Well there is always the new track dialogue but if the last track you created was one of these types which is unavailable using modifiers and a double click, you can double click without a modifier and Pro Tools will create whatever the last created track type was.

One More Thing

If you hold more than one modifier you’ll get more than one track, so if you hold Command+Option+Control+Shift and you double-click you’ll create four tracks. an audio, instrument, aux and master in one operation.
