There is a lot of talk about “Gain Staging” around at the moment. It’s a subject that stirs debate but there does seen to be a lot of confusion about exactly what people are talking about when it gets discussed. Some people swear it is super-important, others suggest that in a DAW it makes little difference. Why do these opposite opinions exist?
We’re not talking about avoiding clipping here, hopefully everyone knows that is bad and how to avoid it. This is about what some might know as gain structure and while because of their floating point processing, modern DAWs have huge internal headroom, there is still a case for managing gain carefully. Particularly as there are reasons why, in practice, this huge dynamic range in a DAW sometimes isn’t available to us.
