Panning Using Delays In Pro Tools - Is This The Way Pan Pots Should Actually Work? - Expert Tutorial

See this content in the original post

In this premium video tutorial, Julian Rodgers demonstrates the Haas effect and how short delays can be used to position mono sounds in the stereo field instead of using conventional level based panning using a pan pot.

How Much Delay Should I Use For Haas Panning?

While the Haas effect is very effective at placing sounds in the panorama it’s not commonly used. This is probably because a level based pan pot is much easier to build, especially using analogue components and is pretty well on every mixing console, hardware of software, analog or digital. However anyone who has ever experimented with Haas delays will have found out that rather than a precise panning effect, they usually get a general sense of width and potential for comb filtering when summed to mono.

While some kind of mono compatibility issues are inevitable using this technique, the lack of precision is often because the delay used is too long. To find out how long a delay is needed and how can you get it using stock Pro Tools plug-ins, watch the video to see.
