When I visited the ATC factory back in the spring of 2018, among the many conversations about their (very lovely) monitors the subject of passive designs came up as there has definitely been a renewed interest in passives since nearly everything in studio monitors went active most of 20 years ago.

Active designs have distinct advantages in studio environments but in the same way that stage monitoring in live shows tends to be passive the SCM12 was proving to be popular for install use, particularly in Dolby Atmos installs where running power to many speakers throughout a room presents exactly the same inconveniences as running power out to active stage monitors at a live show.

Mounting Options For Installs

Therefore it makes perfect sense that ATC have taken their ideal passive speaker for Atmos installs and released an install version with suitable mounting points for flying using standard hardware from K&M and Adaptive Technology. The SCM12 is a 2 way infinite baffle design with a 1” soft dome tweeter featuring ATC’s dual suspension mount which keeps the diaphragm straight and prevents distortion produced by yaw and a 6” bass/midrange driver with a big 1.75” voice coil which, like all the ATC drivers, is hand made in the UK and uses the edge wound design pioneered by ATC which gives greater power handling and better thermal performance than designs using round wire.

These exceptional quality drivers (I speak from experience, I’ve seen them made) and the simple, high quality crossover are housed in a compact (15.7”x9.4”x9.3”) cabinet which weighs in at a solid 33 lb each. All of this makes a speaker which shares the ATC family sound with its excellent off axis response which helps produce a wide sweet spot and the infinite baffle design which in spite of its compact dimensions still produces 80Hz-16KHz +/-2dB, 56Hz-22KHz -6dB performance.
