Over 5 weeks after Apple released 10.14, new macOS Mojave compatible Web drivers are still not available for Nvidia graphics cards that were released after the end of 2013. With previous macOS releases they were usually out within 24 hours. This is especially relevant here for some Mac Pro cheese-grater owners who wants to upgrade to macOS Mojave.

if you own a mid 2010 or mid 2012 Mac Pro with a 2014 or later Nvidia graphics card this means you should not upgrade to macOS Mojave 10.14, even if you wanted to.

This also affects any external GPUs that use Nvidia graphics card released after the end of 2013.

If you do upgrade to macOS Mojave then Nvidia say to expect degraded rendering and performance.

MacRumors challenged Nvidia about the situation and an Nvidia spokesperson told them "while we post the drivers, it's up to Apple to approve them". MacRumors reported that they followed Nvidia’s advice but that “Apple has yet to respond to multiple requests for comment”.

Because macOS Mojave now requires a graphics card that supports Apple’s Metal graphics framework, the newer Nvidia graphics cards such as the GeForce GTX 1080 are not compatible with Apple’s latest operating system 10.14.

However earlier Nvidia graphics cards like the Nvidia's Quadro K5000 and GeForce GTX 680 do support Apple’s Metal framework and as Apple states in their support document are compatible with macOS Mojave.

it is very unclear why Nvidia are choosing to blame Apple for the non-appearance of web drivers for the macOS Mojave release when they were able to release them for the macOS High Sierra release within 24 hours and there is a growing frustration amongst Nvidia users at the lack of macOS Mojave drivers for their latest Nvidia graphics cards.

We await further developments, but if you have an Nvidia graphics card and it isn’t on Apple’s approved list then it’s another reason not to upgrade to macOS Mojave just yet.
