DAD AX32 - Setting Up AX32 As A Monitor Controller In DADman

In this video, Mike speaks to Jan Lykke from DAD at BVE 2018. Jan gives us a walkthrough of the capabilities of the AX32 as a monitor controller and demonstrates the flexibility of the monitor profile configuration window in DADman.

What Is The AX32?

AX32 started life as a high-end mic pre AD/DA for music recording and production. It has since evolved into a monitor controller doing everything from music production to Dolby Atmos.

It differs from most monitor controllers in that they tend to have a fixed amount of I/O. The AX32 can do up to 90 MADI, 72 AES/EBU, 48 channels of analogue IO, 64 channels of Dante and SDI embedding/de-embedding.

You can design your I/O specifically for your needs and also spec your monitor controller specifically for your environment and your compliment of I/O.

Defining A Monitor Profile In DADman

Sources - from mono to 9.1.4, “Multi” settings up to 64 channels or create custom settings.

Outputs - User definable outputs, mixing different output types, for example in this example set up the Atmos output is Dante and the 2.1 mixes analogue and AES outputs.

Fold Down - As well as conventional folddown from a higher channel count to a lower channel count, for example from 5.1 to stereo, the AX32 also supports “fold up” - routing from a lower channel count to higher, in this case folding up from 5.1 to Atmos.

Cues - Because of the flexibility of the group creation in DADman, it is easy to create cue outputs in exactly the same way as control room outputs.

Mic Pre, AD/DA Converter, Patch Matrix, Monitor Controller...

The flexibility of the combination of a high quality, modular system like AX32 can make it difficult to understand what it is because its functionality in terms of I/O, routing and monitor control is so configurable. Once a chassis is bought the sheer number of inputs and outputs of whatever variety which can be freely patched in the fully recallable cross-point patch matrix in DADman and the user definable groups of inputs and outputs which can be set up for monitor control makes the AX32  flexible and powerful enough to manage any workflow.
