While iZotope RX is well known for cleaning up spoiled audio and removing unwanted sounds, what is not so well known is that it can also a great tool for enhancing specific elements in the material that might be a little quiet or buried in the mix.
In this free video tutorial, from the team at iZotope, they show how to increase the loudness of a flute melody in the music for a documentary that re-recording mixer David Barber was editing. In a documentary he was working on, David was asked by the director to make the sound of the flute louder, just before the title sequence.
With the RX 6 Connect plug-in, they send the audio that needs to be edited from Pro Tools into RX. Next, they identify and select the flute melody in the spectrogram using the Time & Frequency Selection tool and then add harmonics (to not lose the unique timbre of the flute when we turn up the gain) using the Harmonic Selection tool.
After turning up the gain of just the flute and its harmonics, to an appropriate level, they send the audio back to Pro Tools and use the RX 6 Connect plug-in to render the changes
