Windows users went into a meltdown that their predictions about the end of Apple were coming true (plot spoiler they are not). Mac users went into denial and said the survey must be flawed to suggest that anyone would ever stop using a Mac in preference for a PC (second plot spoiler some have).

Whatever your views on the validity of the recent poll results on what computer platform people use for Pro Tools, it does reveal a trend that is shocking for some and alarming for others. The survey may be neither shocking or alarming for you, but that doesn't make it any less so for others. Our reaction to something doesn't make it any less valid or true, it simply says who we are.

You'll read statistics every day, for example, according to some divorce statistics, the marriage breakup rate in America for first marriage is 41% to 50%; the rate after second marriage is from 60% to 67%. I remarried some years ago, so the statistic doesn't look good for me, that is if I allow myself to be a statistic, rather than being informed by them.

I happen to think polls are useful, they help us to stay informed and then decide if that information is something we need to do something about. They are not an exact science, I think the outcome of Brexit and the last US Elections should tell us that.

Our recent poll is useful and I was genuinely shocked by the shift in numbers from Mac to PC, I knew some had lost faith in Apple's support for the pro audio user, but I didn't think it was of that size. Yes, I have some friends who have jumped, but on the other hand, I can't think of a pro studio or producer I know who doesn't use a Mac.

How will it affect me? Not a bit, I don't care what the survey says I'm sticking with Apple.

I own a Trash Can and have for about the last 5 years, I have nothing but praise for it, it has never let me down. Yes I know I could have bought something for half the price (perhaps) that can fly me to the moon and print money, but I don't care, I made my choice and don't regret it once. I also have a MacBook Pro, the Touchbar kind with just USB-C connections, you know the one that people spent weeks moaning about buying an adaptor to use older peripherals, the very same people who have a crate the size of a skip full of old cables and also the very same people who sit on the toilet reading RS catalogues. I just opened the box, shrugged my shoulder, went on Amazon and bought a couple of USB-C to USB adaptors for about £5 which I think I've used about half a dozen times in six months.

Do I think Macs are perfect? Nope. Do I think Apple does everything I want? Of course not, they still haven't made a $99 Mac Pro, until they do I'm not sainting anyone. There is no such thing as the perfect computer, just the one we happen to feel most suits us and Macs suit me, a poll isn’t changing that.

Choose the computer that suits you, irrespective of what you might read in polls, in the news or long threads in forums and social media. Stay informed and then decide if it affects you or not, in many cases it won't.
