Check Out This Valuable Home Studio Self Build Video Series

Meet Yoval Ron. Like many of us Yoval had an aspirational dream of building his very own soundproofed home studio. As we all know these types of builds are not for the faint hearted, this didn’t put off Yoval and his talented buddy Shay Ofer one bit. They put their heads together, came up with a plan of attack, worked hard and managed to realise Yoval’s dream. Thankfully Yoval documented the entire process. In this free video series hosted on Yuval Ron’s YouTube channel, learn how these guys built the floating floor, the isolated walls, the ceiling and the double doors.

Soundproofing Is Not the Same As Acoustic Treatment

The process of soundproofing a room isn’t simple and should never be confused with acoustic treatment. Soundproofing often involves building a new room inside of an existing structure, often referred to as a room-within-a-room. These types of structures are designed to decouple (isolate) the new room from the main structure limiting both airborne and structure-borne sound energy from getting out of the studio or vice versa, external sound getting into the studio.

Studio builds require a lot more materials and planning to get the soundproofing right compared to domestic remodelling. Yoval has managed to achieve amazing results on a modest budget mixed with some common sense and grit. Personally, I love these types of videos as they are very inspiring to watch. Sadly Yoval’s studio build story is bittersweet as tragedy struck during the process.

We have watched this entire series and it’s well made with lots of valuable information. Watch this series if you are planning your own studio build for some point in the future. At first glance the studio that Yuval has built looks more like a personal music studio than recording studio but don’t let that impression put you off as the principles of building a soundproof studio (whatever it’s purpose will be) are the same.

Episode 1: How To Build A Floating Studio Floor

A floating floor is considered to be an integral part of any soundproof studio. A well designed and built system isolates the floor frame from the main structural floor of the building. Inexpensive rubber is a trusted material for isolation as well as thick slabs of rockwool which Yoval inserted between the timbre.

Episode 2: How To Build A Studio Double Door System & Soundproof Walls Frame

In this episode Yoval shows how they built the double door system and isolated walls frames. They also had a window to address as well. Watch to learn why they used two masses of door and how they applied a similar principle to the window. Watch also to see the frame of the room-within-a-room take shape.

Episode 3: How To Build A Studio Ceiling Frame & Walls

There’s absolutely no point putting all the work into floating a floor, doubling the doors or isolating the walls if the ceiling isn’t properly considered. Watch how Yoval tackled this stage of his soundproof studio build.

Episode 4: Acoustics Treatment Application & Completion

In this final episode of Yoval’s studio build you will see how they put the finishing touches in place. They test the room and install acoustic treatment to help the room sound as good as it does perform in the soundproofing department.

Yoval, congratulations on your studio build and thank you for documenting your experience. On behalf of The Production Expert Community we extend our deepest sympathies for the loss of your friend Shay, may your video series act as a living tribute to him.
