The clever people at IFIXIT have bought a base model Mac Pro 2019 new style cheese-grater with the express aim of dismantling it as far as they can take it to see how they could take it, before awarding the new Mac Pro a near-perfect score of 9/10 for repairability. Check out the video in this article and the step by step article for all the details.
The article and video from IFIXIT show in great detail how Apple has designed and put together the new Mac Pro and you can see just how easy it is to change the user-replaceable parts, which it turns out are nearly all of them.
The only downside is that while the SSDs are modular, they are not user replaceable because they are tied to the Apple T2 security chip. At any point in the future, if you need to remove and replace the SSD modules, an Apple support document explains that you should contact Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider instead, you will be able to do this for you, for a fee, of course.
The team at iFixit have also been busy and have produced a service manual for the new Mac Pro as well.
Conclusions From IFIXIT
The opening procedure couldn’t be easier.
Basic repairs and upgrades can be performed with standard tools or even no tools at all.
Major components are highly modular and use industry-standard sockets and interfaces, making replacements and upgrades a snap.
Apple provides some step numbers and diagrams right on the device, and publishes free repair manuals for some repairs to help you get it right.
The SSD cards are modular, but custom-made by Apple, complicating replacement.
If you need a replacement part that’s not on Apple’s limited list of approved repairs, you’ll likely pay a dizzying price—if you can find them at all.
