In this week's Free Plug-in, we are featuring Bark of Dog 2, an updated version of their excellent resonant high-pass filter plugin.

The original Bark of Dog was a studio-quality, resonant high-pass filter. Like all gear that becomes classics, Bark of Dog 2 has been designed to make it easy to get great results in both low-frequency cleanup and bass boost.

Bark of Dog 2 operates in stereo or Mid-Side, enabling you to choose between Stereo, Mid only, or Side only processing. It also offers a continuously variable centre frequency knob and A/B comparison mode that automatically saves settings into the selected bank.

Classic Mode

In classic mode, Bark of Dog is a resonant high-pass filter. This is very useful for cleaning up the low end as the resonant bump is introduced, but the boost control boosts the frequencies just above the corner frequency of the high-pass filter. So, with two controls, you can remove unwanted deep bass and dial in a little bottom end to restore any perceived loss of low end. Try this on a kick drum and see what it can do!

Passive Mode

The passive mode is almost the complete opposite of the Classic mode. It is designed to work like the simultaneous boost and attenuation of a Pultec-like boost-attenuation mode. Essentially, it lets you boost your low end without getting muddy. It’s an awesome trick, and Bark of Dog 2 makes it so you can do it with one simple knob turn.

Combo Mode

This third mode combines Classic and Passive modes, giving you more options to clean and tighten your low end, as well as add body to instruments and vocals. It lets you boost the low end like you would in passive mode but cuts out some super low stuff so you don’t blow your speakers. It basically lets you push it harder than you would normally be able to.
