How To Hide a Lavalier Mic Under a T-Shirt

Lavalier microphones clipped to T-Shirts look awful on screen, it’s bad enough for corporate work, but they must be hidden for TV and movies. Here’s how to hide one.

Curtis Judd, a friend of the Experts, is an excellent educator who shares his tips and tricks via a YouTube channel and also in a series of courses based on picture and sound for picture.

In this video he shares a simple and effective tip for hiding a lavalier microphone under a T-Shirt. It does require some pre-production planning as you will see.

He credits the tip to an excellent book by Patrushkha Mierzwa, ‘Behind the Sound Cart: A Veteran's Guide to Sound on the Set.’ It’s worth pointing out that the talent may not always be amiable to this technique, however Patrushkha says; “ I only follow the seams if the shirt is VERY thin (like Roy McBride's in AD ASTRA) and for that, I had Costumes sew it in because the tape would have shown. Many times, once you get over the shoulder to the back, the cable can run down the back, inside or out, depending on the outfit.”

Patrushkha Mierzwa is a producer of documentaries and one of the first women boom operators in Hollywood, sustaining a 40-year career. She is known for Ad Astra (2019), Spy Kids (2001),From Dusk Till Dawn (1996), Once Upon a Time ...in Hollywood (2019) and Killers of the Flower Moon (2023). She is the author of the best-selling book on production sound, "Behind the Sound Cart: A Veteran's Guide to Sound on the Set" and the upcoming, "Behind the Boom Pole: How to Have a Successful Career as a Boom Operator" and "The Blue Collar Guide to Filmmaking.”
