IKEA are making a play for the music production market, teaming up with Swedish House Mafia to release a ‘music production desk’, record deck, chair and bag. Yes, you read that right. The details are shown below, it’s effectively the furniture equivalent of pro level MIDI chord packs. Our thoughts are they should have stuck to selling meatballs.
Expected to be available in Fall 2022 as part of a collaboration with Swedish House Mafia the range, called OBEGRÄNSAD is Swedish for unlimited, and the name hints at the target group of the collection: those with a limited budget but unlimited creativity which also includes a record deck and a studio chair.
At the IKEA Festival at the 2022 Milan Design Week, IKEA revealed three more products from the upcoming collection, which spotlighted a desk for music production, an armchair, and a record player for the collection, called OBEGRÄNSAD.
A Desk With Speaker Stands
The OBEGRÄNSAD desk looks like a stylish table with moveable monitor stands and a built in retractable keyboard shelf. Although dimensions aren’t available at the moment, the shelf looks like it wouldn’t accommodate deeper MIDI controllers with full sized keys, though it would of course suit slim models or a qwerty keyboard. It doesn’t look as if any cable management is built in, though accessories may be available.
IKEA designer Friso Wiersma says.
"Sound is everything in music, and we have added two speaker stands to the desk to bring the speakers to the ear level. We have also added a pull-out shelf below the desktop. This functionality allows you to have a midi keyboard, for example, in easy reach, while maximising space on your desktop"
IKEA have been the inspiration behind some of our favourite money saving studio tips over the years. From their inexpensive wireless speaker or this clever use of Ikea bookcases to make studio gobos all the way through to this example of using an Ikea steel shelf to make a plate reverb Ikea have always been useful to the budget studio community, it looks like with the OBEGRÄNSAD desk Ikea furniture might be about to get a lot more common.
