M-Audio Driver No Longer Available In Pro Tools 2024.3

We’ve been made aware that in Pro Tools 2024.3 the M-Audio Keyboard option is missing from the MIDI Controllers tab of the Peripherals window. When Komplete Kontrol was introduced to Pro Tools in 2021.10, its predecessor, M-Audio keyboard control, was already over a decade old. M-Audio was once owned by Avid, and the integration of Pro Tools with their Axiom range of MIDI controllers dates from back then. Komplete Kontrol is a more feature-rich way to achieve the same thing and more, but the legacy M-Audio driver was still used, particularly by the clever control software Mulligan from ReFuse.

The removal of this driver means that Mulligan is not compatible with Pro Tools 2024.3. On their website, ReFuse posted the following statement:

IMPORTANT: In Pro Tools 2024.3 (released March 7, 2024), the "M-Audio Keyboard" MIDI driver was removed. Mulligan cannot work without this driver. Because of this, Mulligan is compatible only with Pro Tools versions 2023.12.1 and earlier.

The 2024.3 release notes do not refer to this removal of the M-Audio Peripherals option so we reached out to Avid for comment:

During testing for the 2024.3 Pro Tools release, our teams found that the old M-Audio keyboard driver (originally created to support two M-Audio keyboard controllers that have been out of support for over 10 years) was causing unwanted interactions with other control protocols such as EUCON and HUI. It became necessary to remove the driver in Pro Tools 2024.3 to preserve performance, stability, and functionality for EUCON and HUI-based controllers.

With the introduction of MIDI FX support and expanded MIDI signal flow in 2024.3, we’re obviously focused on MIDI workflows and committed to ongoing enhancements of the MIDI capabilities in Pro Tools. We are also working closely with the MIDI association to embrace the latest standards and hope to expand functionality in the near future.

In the meantime, we recommend that users of third-party hardware that relied on the deprecated M-Audio driver to follow the manufacturer’s instructions on how to setup their device with Pro Tools software.
