Patching And Setup For Tracking - Free pureMix Video Extract With Jacquire King

In this free extract from Jacquire King’s Start to Finish series of tutorials on pureMix.net Jacquire and his assistants and Flux Studios consider and decide on some key choices while setting up for a tracking session.

From having a logical, easy to remember patch from the mic lines to the console, appropriate outboard patched and communication between the control room and live area planned.

Sound Radix’s Muteomatic gets referenced, if you’re not familiar with this useful, free plugin you should check it out, it automatically mutes talkback mics during record and playback.

Patchbays aren’t as familiar in a project studio as they once were. the cost and labour involved in setting up a comprehensive patchbay system can be a disincentive. However, bringing everything in a studio together in a patchbay offers unrivalled flexibility and for those of us who aren’t familiar with normalling and don’t know our bantams from our GPO, there are recallable patching systems out there such as the CB Electronics X Patch and the Flock Audio Systems Patch. An interesting development in the world of AoIP is the increasing number of studio users who are using Dante as a way to create a digitally controlled patchbay. Dante Controller is after all a big software cross point matrix.

Watch as Producer, Engineer, and Mixer, Jacquire King, sets up the live room and control room at Flux Studios in New York City, to continue the production of Oak & Ash's first full-length record, with the single "Keep The Light On"

Before getting the gear setup, Jacquire explains the history of the project, and the preproduction of the single "Keep The Light On", which they will be building in this edition of the pureMix Start To Finish Series.

See how Jacquire King:

  • Discusses the history of the song and his approach to pre-production

  • Plays the original demo of "Keep The Light On"

  • Creates a floor plan with his assistants and Flux's Tom Beauchel for where the players and instruments will be set up

  • Explains the benefits of using a cloud lifter on a ribbon microphone

  • Introduces the doctor sample, which will be used as a trashy mono drum microphone

  • Demonstrates an Evans Dixson Bass Drum Lift

  • Patches in the inputs to the console and outboard gear

  • Explains his philosophy on guitar compression

  • Mics up the drum kit with engineer, Kolton Lee
