Product Of The Year 2020 - Expert Choices

We asked our team to share their hardware and software products of 2020 and say why they chose them. In this article, we bring them all together.

Interfaces were a key choice in the hardware category with a range of sections from Audrey’s selection of the Audient EVO4, Brent’s choice of the PreSonus ioStation 24c combined control surface and interface, onto the Metric Halo ULN-8 3D chosen by Steve DeMott and Metric Halo 3D Audio Interfaces are Nathaniel Reichman’s choice. Chris Vandeviver selected Apogee’s Ensemble, which is also Russ’ interface of choice. Eli Krantzberg selected the Apollo 8P From Universal Audio and Avid got 3 interfaces in the Hardware category courtesy of James Richmond with the Avid MTRX, Julian Rodgers with the Pro Tools Carbon and Mike Thornton with the Avid MTRX Studio.

Other selections in the hardware category came from PJ Gibbs with the Alesis Drums Nitro Mesh Kit, Elektron Analog Heat from James Paredes, Kemper profiling amplifier from William Wittman and Russ Hughes with the CalDigit TS3 Plus.

Moving onto the software category and our choices are much more diverse. PreSonus Studio One V5.1 bookended our tour of the best software products of 2020, being the choice of both James Paredes and Brent March. Whilst we are talking DAWs, Logic Pro X was Vandeviver’s choice and Audrey Martinovich chose Pro Tools 2020.11 as her Software Product Of 2020.

Next up is Steve DeMott's choice of Melodyne 5 from Celemony followed by PJ Gibbs choice of Slate Digital’s Fresh Air plugin showing that a free plugin can make the cut.

RX 8 from iZotope makes two appearances in our software choices for 2020 with Eli Krantzberg going to RX 8 Standard and ‘Mr RX It’, Mike Thornton going for RX 8 Advanced.

Julian Rodgers chose Rogue Amoeba’s SoundSource, Nathaniel Reichman selected Liquidsonics Cinematic Rooms, Eventide Instant Flanger is William Wittman’s choice, James Richmond went for Renegade Soundplay High Score

There you have it. The hardware category was concentrated around interfaces whereas the software category was a much broader selection of creative tools.
