Create Vocal Chops With Logic's Quick Sampler

Vocal chops are fun. They stimulate creative rhythmic and melodic ideas that would otherwise be difficult to develop.  If you are not familiar with the term, you are undoubtedly familiar with its sound. I like this definition: The use of fragmented vowels or samples put together to add a catchy element to a track

When it comes to creating vocal chops, there is more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes. Logic's QuickSampler is the perfect tool for slicing up a vocal phrase across the MIDI keyboard. Drag and drop your vocal phrase to the Track Header and choose Quick Sampler Optimized from the available options to set up the instrument. Switching to slicing mode maps the phrases across the keyboard.

With the heavy lifting handled behind the scenes by Logic, now the fun part begins. Experiment with the groove playing. Trigger various keys until you come up with interesting fragments. Remember to use Logic's Capture As Recording function so that no spontaneous ideas get lost.

With a few phrases constructed from the slices, the fun continues by processing them. Quick Sampler has easy and intuitive filtering and modulation. And Logic's plug-ins can do the rest.

Follow along in this video as I take a short vocal phrase, convert it to a quick sample instrument, create some vocal chop phrases, and add processing.
