Remove Unwanted Mouth Noise With Accusonus Mouth De-Clicker

In this video for Production Expert, Audrey Martinovich demonstrates how to remove mouth clicks from audio with the Accusonus' Mouth De-Clicker, which comes packed in their ERA 5 Bundle. Audrey shows us how Mouth De-Clicker can seamlessly solo the mouth clicks and target the noises you want to remove.

A friend recently asked me… “What’s the best way to remove mouth clicks from my audiobook recording?”

I gave him a very Russ Hughes response and told him to change his mic placement. However, that isn’t very helpful advice if you are trying to clean up a problematic recording, and even with better mic placement, the mouth clicks aren’t totally gone which is why I was so excited that Accusonus added a new plugin to their ERA 5 Standard and Pro bundles: Mouth De-Clicker.

I recorded a short voice over with extra close mic placement to pick up plenty of mouth noise to give Mouth De-Clicker a try.

Just like most of the other plugins in the ERA 5 Standard or Pro bundles, Mouth De-Clicker has a single knob to adjust the amount of processing. Choose between Normal or Broad mode and turn up the processing knob to taste. The Diff button effectively solos the mouth clicks and can help you make sure you’re only targeting the noises you want to remove. As gross as it sounded to listen to, part of me wants to sample only the mouth clicks to use as a hi-hat or something.

It's no secret that I’m sceptical about one-knob processors but Accusonus historically has done a really great job with their other denoising software and Mouth De-Clicker is no exception. The processing is very transparent and even with 100% processing in Broad mode, there were very few artifacts or extra bits removed. If you look at the bottom of the plugin, you’ll see the unprocessed signal appear as a black waveform, and the processed signal turns pink as a visual representation.

There is also the output control, which you can use to make sure the output level is the same as the input signal, and the A/B function lets you quickly audition and compare different settings.

It’s as easy as that! Now that I’ve listened to my voice ‘De-Clicked,’ it’s something I can’t unhear so I have a feeling I’ll be regularly reaching out for Mouth De-Clicker in the future.

Give this a try on your next vocal recording whether it’s for an audiobook, podcast or your next single.

The Mouth De-Clicker comes as part of the ERA Standard and Pro Bundles. It’s a great package if you work with audio, whether that’s for a podcast, voice artistry, or to accompany video content.
