In this week’s podcast, Julian is joined by Damian Kearns and James Richmond. This week we are talking about things in the studio we think are still worth doing the hard way - outside the computer.
Damian Kearns
Damian is the owner/operator of Toronto-based post production facility, 217 Audio. Though he specialises in post audio for television and movies, Damian is a versatile engineer with many promotional, pre-production, production and presentation audio credits.
James Richmond
James Richmond is an Oxfordshire based producer, engineer and multi-instrumentalist. He has worked for Solid State Logic and has written for a number of Australia publications since the 1990’s. Previously he was an IT networking consultant. His studio is based around Dante- with some ATC SCM45a’s and a 64 channel Pro Tools HDX rig with a load of analogue outboard.

Talking Points
With so many ways of doing things in the box, can we each give an example of something which is better done ‘for real’.
What about the converse, while it’s nice to spend time and/or money keeping it authentic, does there come a point where it’s an indulgence?
This is of course a moving target. What things can you think of which used to be best done for real which now you’re happy to fake?
And going the other way can you think of things on which you’ve changed your mind and gone back to the “old ways”
Future gazing time - What would you like to see become viable as an in the box solution for something which at present you can’t do?
