Trinnov La Remote - Tested

In the article and video for Production Expert, resident gear junkie James Ivey tests the Trinnov La Remote, a monitor controller for the D-Mon, MC and ST2 systems.

French company Trinnov first started work on their room/speaker optimisation systems back in 2000, with their first systems shipping in 2003. Today there are over 8000 Trinnov controlled studios and home cinemas worldwide, and I'm the proud owner of a Trinnov D Mon 4, which controls my 2.1 studio monitor system.

Trinnov has just launched their new La Remote and thanks to the team at Emerging UK, we put it through its paces.

Trinnov La Remote

As the audio kit goes, La Remote is one of the finest built pieces I have ever seen. The design is stylish, yet perfectly functional, and if you do ever get stuck in your studio and need to break a window to get out, La Remote can help there too, by that I mean it’s heavy. Once it’s on your desk, it’s not something that you are going to nudge off by accident. La Remote is solid.

Setting Up La Remote

Once plugged in, it takes a couple of mouse clicks to get La Remote to talk to the Trinnov software and in turn the hardware. The preset functionality is all great and if you do want to dig in and configure La Remote to your personal requirements (which you are going to want to do) it’s easy to configure. Check out the video for more on this aspect of the setup.

In Use

La Remote is not something your hand will be on all the time, like a mouse or trackball but when you are at the critical listening phase of a project or you are checking your system for “issues” La Remote is a very handy thing to have on hand, as it allows you to interrogate your speakers and monitoring in a very controlled way. La Remote is so much more than just a volume or mute control.

Final Thoughts

While you don’t technically need a La Remote to operate or run your Trinnov optimiser, you will find you use far more of the Trinnov features if you do have a La Remote. In my Stereo or 2.1 configurations, the ability to mute or solo channels is quite handy, however, if I was running a 5.1, 7.1 or even a Dolby Atmos 7.1.2 system or larger and needed to check routings or audio outputs La Remote will get you there far quicker than digging around on the app, and that’s not to say the app is bad, it’s just La Remote is better.

When running a larger system there are going to be times when you need to revert back to a stereo, 2.1, 5.1 or other surround formats. La Remote is perfect for this. It puts the monitor control you need under your fingertips in a unit, that while a little of the pricy side, is a natural companion for a Trinnov system.

You can find out more about all things La Remote and Trinnov at the Trinnov website.
