Universal Audio Sound City Plugin Announced

Universal Audio have unveiled their latest offering, the UAD Sound City Studios Plug-in. This release is a significant addition to UA's lineup because it is something of an outlier in terms of plugin types, a simulation of the most precious thing the the big studios have apart from their experience and expertise - their tracking spaces.

There are products which simulate the mixing spaces and monitoring setups of famous studios, there are simulations of their unique reverb chambers and plate reverbs, and there are virtual instruments which offer the sound of drum kits and the like in the tracking spaces of bit studios, but to date the best known true room simulation of a well known studio space has been the, now rather long in the tooth, Ocean Way plugin from Universal Audio. This plugin has been a longtime favourite of many mixers, offering as it does, something very unusual which goes beyond a conventional reverb.

The new Sound City Studios Plug-in updates the concept behind the Ocean Way plugin and updates it for the 2020s. Based on a studio of similar stature with a strong association with some classic records and, unlike the Ocean Way plugin, it runs on Spark, meaning that you don’t need any UAD hardware to run it.

About The Sound City Studios Plug-in

Sound City Studios has been behind over 100 gold and platinum records since its establishment in 1969. The studio's historic walls have witnessed the birth of classic albums from artists such as Nirvana, Metallica, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, Rage Against the Machine and more.

The UAD Sound City Studios Plug-in reproduces every element of this space. Its distinctive room, mics, analogue equipment, and legendary mixing console.

Bill Putnam Jr., CEO of Universal Audio, remarks, "Rock music is alive and well. Sound City is a studio that was crucial to so many records that we all love, and we’re thrilled to open its doors to music creators around the world."

Sandy Skeeter, President of Sound City Inc., adds, "Sound City has always been a place that nurtures talent, helping artists to find their voice. Thanks to UA, a new generation of artists can put their music through our historic Studio A live room and carry out the same sonic techniques secretly used by their favorite rock heroes over the decades."

The UAD Sound City Studios costs $349 and offers a range of features to enhance the music-making experience. Users can quickly dial in sounds by selecting their source and choosing presets based on time-honed room and mic combinations. The plug-in employs Dynamic Room Modelling technology, allowing users to move classic condenser and ribbon mics in real-time for authenticity beyond static IR-based room modelling plug-ins.
