We Find The Site That Retro Gearheads Might Love

We’re always on the hunt for weird and wonderful websites, and recently we hit a place containing possibly some of the world’s biggest, dustiest rack furniture (almost) fully loaded with classic units from the annals of time. We take a peek…

There are many industries that hold a special place for the gear and tools of their trade from days gone by. Most reading this will know that ours is no different, and many will be reminiscing about the days of levers, buttons, and switches, before anyone can say “downtime”. There’s no doubt that we owe a great deal to the hardware trailblazers of old; certainly these boxes shaped how we work and inspired countless advances with a good few imitations as well.

The Rack Of Ages

Recently Russ came across The Rack Of Ages. This is currently a one page website featuring a large hall-of-fame ‘rack’ featuring classic gear pieces with an emphasis on digital time-based tech. Covering over half a century of gear, this work-in-progress covers the gamut of makes and their place in history. Each piece’s thumbnail opens up to give a brief rundown and 360 image of the gear in question where available. A nice touch are buttons along the top of the page that let you filter the results by make or category.

The page features some familiar platinum selling boxes, such as the Eventide’s Harmonizer and EMT’s 250 and 251 digital reverberators. Lego don’t make digital reverb, but if they did it would look like those two… Curiosities such as Ursa Major’s SST-282 Space Station will jog some memories as well from a time when ‘bucket brigade’ could still be a big ticket investment. Others such as Yamaha’s R1000 entry level digital reverberator might bring back the days of bouncing tracks down with reverb-and-all…

Whether you’re an unashamed retro revisionist, or a cutting edge techhead warrior, The Rack Of Ages’ self-proclaimed “home of 19 inch pleasure” is a great distraction to fill all that spare time you don’t have…
