CHALLENGE 3
Ever wondered how Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Studio One handle MIDI auto punch recording? Three Experts take on the challenge. See what happens.
It’s not a shoot-out per se but more of a comparison, these challenges are not here to convince you to change DAW. Firstly, we hope they will help someone looking to handle MIDI auto punch in one of the main DAWs. Secondly, you may use more than one DAW, be an expert in one of them but only use the other from time-to-time, this should help you.
MIDI Auto Punch Record
For the latest challenge, we wanted to see how Pro Tools, Logic Pro and Studio One handled MIDI auto punch recording. This is where we need to replace some MIDI but need to have the computer drop into record automatically across a certain time range.
What Is MIDI Auto Punch Record?
It’s hard trying to use keyboard commands when using your hands for playing a keyboard part. To get around this DAWs offer automatic recording around a region. This helps enormously as it means you can concentrate on your performance and not have to worry about hitting a keyboard shortcut.
More Challenges To Come
So imagine a triangular boxing ring, in the red corner we have Julian Rodgers for team Pro Tools. In the green corner, we have Eli Krantzberg for team Logic Pro. In the blue corner, we have Russ Hughes for team Studio One.
There will be more challenges over the coming weeks and we hope by doing this you’ll see the strengths and weaknesses of each DAW.
We hope you have as much fun watching these as we have had making them.
After watching, let us know which workflow you prefer.
