For the first 10 - 15 years in my career, I was very much an 'audio based' producer. Meaning that although I owned some virtual instruments, and knew the basics of how to use them, I would always think in terms of sampling something, then playing it back and processing to taste vs creating my bass sounds using basic synthesis. This is something I have been actively trying to change over the last couple years.
So instead of turning to my usual, go-to sampled instruments, these days I am trying to focus on using more software based synths and either finding a preset thats a good fit and tweaking. Or - creating my own sounds entirely from scratch using basic synthesis. In this case, I've gone with the former - Turning to Waves Element for my bass sound. In addition, CLA Bass is also used to help customize the sound a little further.

After coming up with the right sound to fit the track, he then begins to add additional processing using additional Waves plug-ins such as CLA BASS, and OneKnob Filter.
