Review - Audified RZ062 EQ Plug-in

In this review, Production Expert team member Julian Rodgers takes a look at the Audified RZ062 equaliser plug-in. The RZ062 equalizers were designed in Germany almost 60 years ago for installation in mixing consoles, together with the U73b compressors and other valve-based modules of the time.

Two Versions - Different Midrange Filters

The RZ062a and RZ062b modules differ in the function of the midrange control.

RZ062a

Tilt EQ In RZ604a

The midrange control acts as a tilt EQ, shifting the entire frequency curve around the central point (650 Hz). When the bass frequencies are raised, the top is simultaneously lowered.

The curve through the centre frequency is steep whereas trying to achieve a similar result using shelving filters would be flat through the midrange.

RZ062b

The b-module has a presence control in place of the a's tilt EQ. This presence knob gives a boost-only bell filter at one of four frequencies (1.4, 2, 2.8 and 4 kHz). These boosts are at well chosen frequencies and respond well to sources such as snare drums and electric guitars.

Both versions have HF and LF shelving filters with varying amounts of cut and boost and with careful use of the separate input and output level controls harmonic distortion can be applied and if the EQ is configured for M/S use the stereo image can be manipulated, see the drum bus example in the video review to see this in action.
