Check out this tip in this free Pro Tools video tutorial. In the Options menu, there is a setting to change your track meters from pre-fader to post-fader. Have you ever changed it? Do you know what it does or why you might want to change it?
Pre/Post Fader Meters
Pre/Post fader meters are useful and appropriate for different stages of the production process. Depending on what you are doing there is a most suitable setting. “What do I want the meters to tell me?” is a good place to start. When tracking, monitoring the levels going to disk, avoiding clipping and preserving headroom are all important. When mixing having the track meters offer a visual indication of how loud a contribution to the mix that track is making is often more helpful. Pre and post-fade meters offer exactly this choice.
